José Luis Lugo Hernández, owner of Panther Publishing in Mexico City, specializes in printing flyers for the tropical "sonideras" or "sound systems": massive outdoor dance parties featuring deejays, immense sound systems and flashing light shows. Hernández has amassed a sizable collection of flyers since the sound system culture first emerged in Mexico and Central America in the 1960s and '70s. Most of the included 300 flyers from Hernández’s collection were drawn by or based on the style of Jaime Ruelas, a graphic designer and illustrator from Mexico City whose work set the visual standard for flyer and poster art in the Disco sound system scene of the 1980s. The book showcases the visual and material culture of this popular music culture through a selection of printed ephemera and includes interviews with José Luis Lugo Hernández; Jaime Ruelas; and Apolinar Silva de Barrera, owner of Polymarchs, one of the most successful sound systems in the history of Mexico City.
